Introduction
This key and challenging position is available for a self-driven and highly competent individual to head up United Container Depots, our Container Depot division located in Durban, Cape Town and Johannesburg. The purpose of the role is to lead, enable and manage operational strategy, procedures, people, resourcing, business efficiencies, growth, profitability, culture, quality and Health & Safety.
Job description

Reporting to the CEO, the successful applicant will be responsible for the following:

• Responsible for the operations business strategy, profitability and sustainability of UCD and the efficient management of the division through the Depot Managers
• Overseeing cost and quality parameters ensuring container production line utilisation is run efficiently
• Overall responsibility for HSEC and creating a safety culture
• Ensure SOPs are in place and correctly documented and adhered to, ensuring acceptable work standards
• Ensure the optimal people structures and skills are in place and that the work streams i.e., Operations, Workshop, Reefer, Call outs, Admin and Finance, are well coordinated across all depots
• Maintaining and managing customer relationships and business growth, including identifying new business opportunities and conducting feasibility studies on new projects
• Communicating with customers and suppliers regularly to ensure efficient production line coordination
• Negotiate and maintain contracts and relations with stakeholders, i.e. PPECB, Portnet and other logistics service providers
• Negotiating SLA’s, customer contracts, rates, leases, expansion / new branches or relocations
• Marketing strategy and events / in initiatives that promote the brand
• Implementation and maintenance of systems and processes which identifies operational inefficiencies, quality deviations / issues and productivity / output
• Allocating and managing divisional budgets, forecasts and the P&L of the division, ensuring debtors are properly maintained
• Ensuring operational level KPI’s and reporting are in place which provides input into timely and effective decision making, corrective action and increased productivity
• Overall responsibility for inventory control and procurement processes, asset management and WIP turnaround
• Enforcing facility security and employee safety measures and standards
• Oversee that legal and industry requirements are met such as the OSHACT
• Create constructive change within the division that is beneficial to the company on a wider scale, identifying synergies across the business
• Identifying and mitigating risk, including disaster recovery and business continuity planning
• Ensure a culture of collaboration and a Can-do attitude
• Talent management, employee development plans, performance management and discipline
• Reporting on productivity, customer satisfaction, financial, business growth and employee engagement metrics to the Executive

Minimum requirements

Qualifications, Competencies & Experience:

• BCom or Logistics Degree
• Minimum of 5 - 7 years’ experience at senior management level / similar role
• Ability to run a production line with set quality outcomes and performance targets
• Financial, Sales and General Management experience

• Leadership capability and organisational skills
• Ethos of continuous improvement and quality delivery
• Identifying problems and implement preventative strategies to minimise risk
• Strong communication skills and able to develop good working relationships and trust with various teams and with stakeholders
• Strong problem-solving skills, analytic ability and detail-oriented
• Good understanding of financial accounts in order to manage debtors / creditors
• Able to travel as and when required
• Valid driver’s license essential
