MAIN PURPOSE OF THE ROLE:
The health and safety officer's main aim are to prevent accidents, injuries, and work-related illnesses in the workplace. This role is to implement and proactively manage health and safety policies in accordance with the latest legislation and to ensure that these policies are implemented by management and employees at Grindrod.

To ensure that the respective business units you appointed to for Safety, Health and working environment is aligned with Grindrod Logistics SHERQ standards. Alignment, maintenance, and management to ISO 9001, 14001 and 45001 standards inclusive of other prescriptive legislations and best safety practice standards that the company has in place or adopts.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREARS
General Responsibilities
  • Provide support to the Terminal in respect to all aspects of health and safety compliance including security management
  • Daily walk through of the Terminal, recording and providing actions for Safety and Security.
  • Weekly internal audits as per Grindrod SHEQ Safety and Security protocols.
  • Provide guidance and co-ordinate SHEQ related internal training to all Employees/ Contractors/ Appointees. (Toolbox Talks, Awareness, Induction)
  • Oversee the issuing of induction cards, indemnity contracts, and visitor registers to all staff/ Contractors.
  • Oversee and manage the data capturing and maintenance of document control system to comply with ISO9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 45001 standards which must coincide with all regions in terms of system and format.
  • Assist with implementing and achieving ISO9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 45001 accreditation regionally.
  • Oversee and ensure that all equipment being utilized is maintained, presentable and acceptable regionally.
  • Keep the SHEQ Manager fully advised of all relevant SHEQ matters.
  • Identify deviations and implement corrective action - regionally.
  • Enhance continuous efficiency improvements - regionally.
  • Provide accurate data and documentation to all parties concerned including monthly SHEQ statistics and measurements as required by Grindrod Group.
  • Sustainability reporting on Safety, Environment and Waste Management Capture data and populate on Work Trainer.
  • Identify key SHEQ initiatives to be implemented within GIM.
  • Carry out daily inspections to enforce conformance and compliance.
  • Follow up on deviations with regards to SHEQ issues to ensure compliance to permits, bylaws and legislation.
  • Assist with the implementation of a behaviour based SHEQ system.
  • Conduct monthly SHEQ and sustainability audits and produce reports to Terminal Managers including the SHEQ Manager for implementation of corrective and preventive actions.
  • Implement and manage high risk standards quarterly.
  • Mentor all SHE Representatives/and interns on site to ensure that thev carry out their responsibilities as stipulated in the OHS Act.
  • Demonstrate authority by refusing or stopping any unsafe work that is/ could be conducted on site.
  • Identify the needs of awareness campaigns and supervise the implementation of such awareness.
  • Liaise with Contractors on a regular basis and assist them in complying with the OHS Act requirements.
  • Submit SHEQ monthly performance summary reports to the SHEQ National Manager.
  • Incident/Accident Management including consequence management.
  • Maintenance of COID, Incident register, Planned Job observations, Near Miss Reporting, Non- Conformances.
  • Avail reports for incidents that should be reported to the Department of Labour as stipulated under section 24 of the OHS Act.
  • Maintain emergency plans to ensure timeous response to emergency conditions.
  • Maintain a zero-tolerance attitude towards SHEQ and ensure the culture of GIM is to maintain ZERO fatalities.
  • Assist the SHEQ Manager in progression towards reducing carbon emissions, pollution, contamination, and other relevant environmental
  • concerns within GIM.
Administration
  • Ensure all incident reports are captured, investigated, and corrective measures are followed up for all sites concerned.
  • Keep policies, procedures, and standards in ISO9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 45001 files up to date.
  • Ensure that the sustainability files are up to date including source documentation.
  • Provide guidance on the managing of IOD’s via Workmen Compensation, First Aid matters, co-coordinating site visits, analysing external audit/ monthly reports for deviations, and maintaining the SHEQ aspects on the Risk Drive (internal IT network drive).
  • Ensure that an up-to-date SHEQ filing system is maintained for the terminal.
  • Ensure driver medicals, heavy machinery licenses, HSE permits for sites and other associated HSE records are filed and updated accordingly.
General Tasks
  • Undertake all duties and responsibilities in accordance with Company policies and procedures.
  • Ensure that the Company Health, Safety & Environment policy, and procedures are observed as well as all relevant safety and the provisions of the relevant Health and Safety & Environmental Legislation are complied with.
  • Ensure that legal requirements are updated and communicated to those that have a need to know.
  • Reporting to the National SHEQ Manager on deviations and incidents.

Minimum requirements

Qualifications
  • National Diploma/Degree Safety/Environment
  • NEBOSH (Safety or Environmental — National/International Diploma).

  • Studying towards or completed relevant tertiary level SHEQ Qualification.
  • Samtrac
Job Specific Certifications
  • SHE Rep, Fire, First Aid, Incident Investigator, courses preferably.
Professional Registrations
  • Preferable — SAIOSH , IOSH or SACPCMP (Not essential)
Experience
  • Two years practical work experience.
Job Specific Requirements
  • Knowledge of the OHS Act, COID Act and NEMA.
