Grindrod Terminals is currently recruiting for an Environmental Officer to join our dynamic team in Richards Bay.
Job description

  • Manage and maintain all environmental permits and licenses – ensure they are updated, applied for, renewed, and audited internally and externally (i.e. WUL, EIA, AEL, EDP, demarcation permits, effluent discharge permit etc.)
  • Manage the compliance to all environmental license/permit conditions, legislation, regulations and reporting of any non-compliances and corrective action.
  • Ensure that all environmental impacts are addressed and that appropriate mitigation measures are implemented.
  • Manage and conduct Environmental Standards audits.
  • Liaise with government departments and other stakeholders and attend important environmental consultations and/or meetings.
  • Take part in weekly management walkabouts.
  • Ensure EMS requirements are implemented and maintained.
  • Maintain a system of reporting environmental incidents.
  • Conduct environmental inspections and compile associated reports.
  • Manage external environmental audit and other services.
  • Manage all environmental data collection and capturing thereof.
  • Problem solving, decision making, interpersonal skills, business acumen, planning, response to pressure, innovativeness, leadership, etc.
  • Investigate environmental incidents using ICAM methodology.
  • Be prepared to work after hours or be called out should major environmental related incidents occurred outside office hours.
  • Active participation in external audits. Conducting of internal and external service provider audits.
  • Must be able to participate actively in project management on a senior level.
  • Collecting dust and water samples, compiling of dust reports for authorities,
  • Develop scope, oversee and monitor Environmental Impact Assessment projects. Ensure all projects meet regulatory requirements.
  • Facilitate the monitoring of particulate matter (PM10 and PM 2,5) for relevant sites.
  • Conduct environmental audits, propose mitigation measures to correct finding and report on all findings. 

Minimum requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS TO PERFORM JOB:
  • BSc Environmental Management/Science Degree/equivalent.
  • Excellent report writing skills
  • Working knowledge of ISO 14001 requirements and manage ISO internal and external audits.
  • Have excellent Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint literacy.
  • EMS Auditing certificate and experience 
  • Environmental legislation i.e. NEMA, NEM: AQA, NEM: WA etc.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATION: 
 
  • BSc. Degree in Environmental Management.
 
MINIMUM PERIOD OF EXPERIENCE/ TRAINING 
  •  Work in a coal environment would be an advantage. 
  • Tertiary education practical experience.
