Introduction
Grindrod South Africa is looking to secure permanent services of a suitably qualified Operations Manager in a diverse bulk handling operation (import, stockpiling, export), to carry out duties of all supervision and maintenance of product, material, machinery and infrastructure on sites thereby ensuring efficient and systematic stockpiling, cargo handling, resource planning of material flow as per the operational requirement.
Job description

  • To ensure cargo flow at all times (no plant stoppage) as per the requirements
  • Effective communicating and reporting with all relevant personnel and stakeholders
  • Managing staff and resources in his/her section
  • Ensuring customer requirements are understood, and they are kept continuously updated on performance, and deviations to the operation.
  • Issuing of instructions to his/her subordinates in order to do the work as required
  • Maintain hygiene and housekeeping requirements within your departments
  • Maintain and enforce adherence to Personal Protective Equipment requirements
  • All relevant adherence and maintenance concerning the SHEQ policies and procedures applicable to your departments.
  • Conduct risk assessment on job categories, with regular site visits.
  • Motivate and direct personnel to accomplish the targets
  • Apply and follow disciplinary procedures when necessary
  • Oversee outsourced labour requirements, and ensure they are utilised optimally
  • Review and follows-up on subordinates performance
  • Supervise, manage and allocate operational staff to obtain efficient and cost effective production levels
  • Liaise with and assist maintenance department in optimising plant and equipment uptime
  • Continuously improving operations performance and procedures by identifying areas of improvement, cost saving and efficiency gains.
  • Attend relevant meetings (and chairing)
  • Ensure that client's special requirements for the day/shift conveyed to and understood by the Controllers
  • Understand optimal stockpiling of bulk handling in order to allow for maximum efficiency in receiving and dispatching from stockpile.
  • Be available afterhours where required.

Minimum requirements

  • Matric/Grade 12
  • Code 8 driver's licence
  • Operations management or Technical Diploma (or equivalent)
  • A M 4 qualification in Supply Chain Management will serve as an added advantage.
  • 8 years Supervisory and Management experience
Knowledge and Skills
  • Knowledge of Rail Operations
  • Knowledge of Bulk material handling and stockpiling
  • Knowledge of bulk cargo stockpile management
