Job description

Overall Job Purpose
Officiating of Employee Relations and related matters for divisions within Grindrod Group inclusive of supportive function to Human Resources: ER and Transformation Manager.

Key Performance Areas
  • Co-ordinated officiating of Employee Relations (ER) matters with ER and Transformation Manager. 
  • Management of Administrative Controller reporting in the Employee Relations Specialist position.
  • Building of constructive relationships between employees, unions and management.
  • Advise, consult, facilitate and sensitise on ER structures and procedures for the day-to-day practical aspects of an ER function and ensure an efficient and effective service is rendered.
  • Officiate the implementation and application of disciplinary and grievance procedures and policies.
  • Chairing and/or initiating of disciplinary hearings and grievance processes. 
  • Implement and maintain a comprehensive ER administration system.
  • Maintain and update labour related policies and procedures, ensuring the enforcement and adherence of these policies and procedures by advising and monitoring management and staff.
  • Represent the company at the CCMA and relevant Bargaining Councils in conciliation and arbitration processes.
  • Conduct and develop ER related training.
  • Facilitate and maintain a good working relationship with unions and union officials.
  • Monitor, review, and suggest interventions to optimise collective agreements.
  • Consult and advise management and employees with regard to legislation, policies and procedures.
  • Monitor internal ER trends within the Group and submit relevant reports.
  • Conduct research on relevant aspects of employment law (LRA, BCEA, EEA, UIF etc.) and advise on legal developments affecting divisions.  
  • Assist with B-BBEE and Employment Equity reporting, monitoring and liaisons with Department of Labour and external verification service providers. 
  • Conduct company retrenchment consultation with representative Trade Unions and/or effected employee/s.
  • Keep management informed of ER developments/topics through written briefs and publications.
  • Facilitate a uniform and consistent approach towards the handling of ER matters within the Group.
  • Analyze and advise on potential legal and other risks in various ER processes.
  • Provide administrative, co-ordinative and legal support function on B-BBEE portfolio (Preferential Procurement, ESD and SED). 
  • Develop and conduct Employment Equity (EE) training, provide advisory and administrative support to divisions in respect of EE compliance and implementation.  

Minimum requirements

Education and Experience
  • LLB or relevant Human Resources Qualification with two-three years of working experience dealing with Labour Law and/or Employee Relations
  • Good experience in initiating and chairing of disciplinary matters
  • Experience in independently handling of CCMA/Bargaining Council conciliations and arbitrations
  • Post-graduate qualification in Employee Relations/Labour Law and/or ability to speak multiple languages would be advantageous.  
Knowledge and Skills
  • Ability to interpret, analyze and apply legal principles to provide practical solutions
  • Strong experience in initiating and chairing of disciplinary matters
  • Experience in the handling of CCMA/Bargaining Council matters
  • Ability to collect, collate, organize and interpret data to propose tactical plans
  • Strong writing and orating ability
  • Good negotiation and conflict resolution ability
  • Good administrative and organizational skills for the purposes of knowledge management
  • Good legal research ability (electronic and physical resources)
  • Ability to apply knowledge in a creative/innovative fashion
  • Good Microsoft Word and Powerpoint capability
  • Good Microsoft excel ability beneficial.
