Introduction
The Terminal Supervisor is responsible for overseeing daily terminal operations to ensure the safe, efficient, and compliant handling of cargo, vessel operations, and equipment utilization. The role coordinates operational teams, maintains safety and quality standards, resolves operational issues, and supports continuous improvement initiatives across terminal activities.
Job description

1. Operational Supervision

  • Oversee cargo handling, vessel loading and unloading, and equipment movements.
  • Supervise cranes, reach stackers, forklifts, and other handling equipment.
  • Coordinate container loading, unloading, stacking, and documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with operational procedures, safety standards, and regulations.
  • Monitor vessel, truck, and equipment scheduling to optimize throughput.
  • Conduct inspections of machinery, equipment, and work areas.
  • Implement best practices to improve safety and operational efficiency.

2. Staff Management & Leadership

  • Supervise and support operational employees.
  • Allocate work and monitor performance.
  • Provide coaching, training, and development support.
  • Manage attendance, leave, and disciplinary matters.
  • Foster teamwork and effective communication.
  • Conduct performance reviews and provide constructive feedback.

3. Safety, Quality & Compliance

  • Enforce workplace safety regulations and procedures.
  • Ensure adherence to environmental and industry standards.
  • Maintain records of inspections, incidents, and corrective actions.
  • Promote a strong safety culture within the terminal.

4. Coordination & Communication

  • Serve as a key liaison between the terminal, vessel agents, customers, and internal departments.
  • Communicate operational updates and resolve issues promptly.
  • Compile operational reports and activity logs.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives through operational feedback and recommendations.

Minimum requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • Grade 12.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Industrial Engineering, Business Administration, or a related field.

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum 5 years' progressive experience in terminal operations, logistics, or port management.
  • Experience supervising large teams within a cargo handling environment.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of logistics and transportation safety practices.
  • Demonstrated analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making capability.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Strong understanding of cargo handling and port operations.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations, environmental standards, and compliance requirements.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Familiarity with freight handling and inventory management.
  • Ability to analyse operational data and identify trends.
  • Strong report-writing and documentation skills.
  • Conflict resolution and employee relations capability.
  • Ability to lead, motivate, and develop diverse teams.
