An exciting opportunity has become available for a self-motivated, driven, and innovative individual to join Grindrod Rail Consultancy Services (Pty) Ltd at their offices in Mpumalanga in the position of a Train Driver. All suitably qualified candidates are invited to apply for this vacancy.
Job description
- Check roster, sign on duty, and read and sign notice book.
- Comply to alcohol and drug testing policy.
- Check for all required equipment on the locomotive.
- Enforce good house keeping practices.
- Be able to perform all type of brake tests for different braking systems as prescribed.
- Assist in coupling of air pipes, brake pipes and jumper cable for multiple unit consists.
- Ensure all locomotive pre checks and testing are performed. Report all defects to the Supervisor and Technical Team.
- Ensure locomotives are in roadworthy condition and all functions are in working condition.
- Ensure road knowledge of all operational areas.
- Ensure that all site layout and procedures are understood and complied too as per instruction.
- Ensure all vacuum or air brake pipes are couple through all the locomotives/wagons.
- Ensure all handbrakes are released or correctly fastened whichever is applicable.
- Ensure all wagon doors are properly closed where applicable.
- Comply to Safeguarding of trains and or locomotives whichever is applicable.
- Monitor all Shunting activities as prescribed and adhere to shunting instructions via radio and/or hand signals.
- Ensure that all relevant documents are completed and correct.
- Enforce compliance to all relevant rules (Local Appendices/General Appendix and Train Working Rules.)
- Keep a good lookout on own train as well as for other trains for safe passage (POSMOR)
- Keep a good lookout for maintenance personnel, members of the public and/or animals. (POSMOR)
- Provides supervision and direction to Train Assistant.
- Control all train and shunt movements as prescribed in Train Working Rules, General Appendix and in accordance with prescribed Train Handling Methodology.
- Perform a brake efficiency test as soon as possible after departure as described in TWR.
- Always be vigilant.
- Adhere to shunting instructions from Train Assistant.
- Adhere to train arrangements, authorizations and any other instruction as deemed necessary for the safe movement of trains.
- Participate in all safety meetings and Toolbox talks.
- Adhere to required safety standards and requirements.
- Identifies risks and/or unsafe conditions, takes corrective action and reports to the Site Manager.
- Carries out planned / unplanned task observations/ inspection on all activities and sites.
- Give on the job training if necessary.
- Ensures procedures and activities meet legislation requirements.
- Investigates all incidents/occurrences, take corrective action in collaboration with the Site Manager.
- Report all incidents and accidents to the Site Manager and Nominated Manager.
- Ensures that locomotive pre-inspections and procedure are performed by train crew and trip reports are thoroughly completed and handed to the Technical Team.
- Provides reasonable assistance to Maintenance Team.
- Adhere to energy saving strategies as prescribed.
Minimum requirements
Qualification / s
Grade 12/ Matric with Mathematics or Science is required.
Diploma or Certificate in Train Driver Duties.
Train Working Rules
Diesel Electric Locomotive.
Certificate in compressed air brake system
Train Handling Methodology
Experience
- 3 years’ experience as a Train Driver.
- Experience in diesel-electric locomotive operations is essential.
- Proven train handling experience on heavy haul operations will be advantageous.
- Demonstrated operational knowledge of the Belfast to Komati route or similar corridors will be advantageous.
- Knowledge of Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) operating environments, procedures, and interfaces will be advantageous.
- Candidates must have a clean safety record, with no history of serious incidents, accidents, or disciplinary findings related to train operations.
